Holes in the scientific arena

Scientists have been theorizing about a couple of scientific holes through out the 19th century. this article would discuss very briefly a few  and relative links to location which contains more details in case you are interested.

So far there has been research carried out on three types of holes in the universe

  1. Blackholes
  2. Whiteholes
  3. Wormholes

What is a Blackhole?

A black hole is a specific region of space where the gravitational force is so strong that it pulls everything towards itself and its theorized that not even light cant escape from it. The theory of general relativity in layman terms suggests that when ever a very large mass is packed so compactly that it occupies very little space its gravitational pull increases so tremendously that the result is known as black hole.

So far the smallest and lightest black hole yet discovered by scientists at NASA has just 24 km diameter with a mass as large as 3.8 times our sun.

The lowest-mass known black hole belongs to a binary system named XTE J1650-500. The black hole has about 3.8 times the mass of our sun, and is orbited by a companion star, as depicted in this illustration.(Credit: Image: © NASA/CXC/A. Hobar)

Since light cant escape a black hole so there is no reflection possible from it. Therefore Black holes can't be seen, but they're identified by the activity around them. An estimated size of the region occupied by the black hole and how much mass must be in that confined region is calculated by measuring the surrounding activity. More specifically, astronomers can weigh black holes by using a relationship between the apparent size of the black hole and the X-rays emitted by the torrent of gas that swirls into the black hole's disk from its companion star.

For future space travelers "If you ventured too close to J1650’s black hole, its gravity would tidally stretch your body into a strand of spaghetti," says Shaposhnikov.

Can a blackhole be made artificially?

The answer is Yes, scientist believes that microscpic blackholes can be formed here on earth.

What is a white Hole?

In general relativity, a white hole is a hypothetical region of spacetime which cannot be entered from the outside, although matter and light can escape from it. In this sense, it is the opposite of a black hole, which can only be entered from the outside and from which matter and light cannot escape. more details on white holes are available here.

Can a white hole be formed or created?

The answer is No, so far there are no known physical processes through which a white hole could be formed.

What is a Worm Hole

In theory, wormholes are tunnel-like connections made out of space-time, offering a shorter distance between two vastly separated areas of the universe. The idea is that space travelers can use these tunnels to make space commutes much shorter than thousands of years. The concept of wormholes has been depicted in several Famous television series like Stargate SG-1 , Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe.

Does wormholes Really Exist?

Theoretically they can be generated as wormholes are consistent with the general theory of relativity, but whether wormholes actually exist remains to be seen. for more details click here
